Reisverslag 1st week!
4 maart 2014
This was the first day here and so we had a relaxing day. Still the day started very early. We all woke up at half past 5 so we could leave half past 6. We went to Hermanus. We toke a boat and we searched for sharks (and whales). firsts they took us to a pace where occur a lot and then to a small island where seals where. This was a feeding place for the sharks. On our way back to the small harbour we saw a great white shark. I never thought i would be able to see one! in the afternoon we visited the city centre of Hermanus, we also had dinner there. It was a relaxing day but still we did a lot!
This was our first day on the Emil Weder High School. We followed the school program. My buddy took me around the school and showed some classrooms and introduced to her friends and teachers. She is really nice. In every class she showed me her books and explained to me what they were discussing in class. she also gave me her exercises so i could do some of them aswell! Though the lessons were really chaotic. I expected a more stricter system. Because where the only white people at school, everyone starred at us. it gave us a weird feeling as if we were made fun off. In the afternoon we got a tour in the Genadendal museum. this was a museum through our own hostel. it was kind off funny to realise what the building was used for in the past century. we ended the day with a meal made by us and the teachers.
This was our second day at school. This day was a more relaxed day because the starring was a lot less which gave me a better feeling. Also the lessons somehow were more structured. the first day of school I found it hard to follow everything that was said but this day
I could follow everything more easily. Also the language isn't very difficult. If everyone talks really slow and very clear i can understand some parts. the same goes for them when we speak Dutch. Really funny! REading i don't need help with, that's very easy! At the end of school my buddiy took me home. She lives in Greyton so we went by bus. I met her grandparents, her mother, her brothers and sister and a lot off uncles and aunts. They were all really nice and I hearded from Shandre (my buddy) that everyone was really excited to meet me! I found that really sweet. After I met everyone we had lunch at a small restaurant and she showed me her villige together with others from my group and their buddies.
This was a quite shokking day I think because we went to the townships with Ajax Capetowm. At first we were supposed to drive through one of the townships but because the gangster there were in a fight it was to dangerous. There were guns fired! when i heard that i though like whooh it is pretty serious. Also we don't have guns at the streets so I had to get used to that. Finally we went to two primary school to run the educational program which Ajax had prepared. Most of these programs excist of half an hour education ad the other half playing soccer. The education programs ar mostly about save sex, HIV and AIDS, smoking etc. which i think is good because you see that in the townships most of these things are ignored. At the first school the boys were playing soocer but the girls were with us, they asked us questionand we asked them some questions. but then all hell broke loose, the brake.... Everyone already saw us but now everyone wanted a hug and they wanted to be on a picture with everyone. they were touching our hair bacause most of our girls are blonds. this was really chaotic but fun to because you could see that all the kids loved the attention! Though, I had in the back of my mind the fact of where they live, in the townships. Because of that the school were all protected with steal gates and barbed wire on top of it. It gives a an unsafe image and image! I'm glad I experienced it because it makes me think about how everything workes.
This was a fun day again. We vistited the most South-Western point of South-Africa, Cape of good hope.First we drove through a national park were we saw baboons. And then the most exhauting part of the day began, the long walk to the top of the mountain AND back!!! At some points we stopped because the view their was amazing, i took a lot of picture here!it was really hot that day so that made it evem harder to walk that mouintain. but i'm glad i joined! on our way back we stopped at a small market where they had these samll black statues which all of us wanted really bad. I bought an elephant, a lion and a pinguin. Finally we went to a samll town were we had dinner and even saw pingiuns!
This was our first day off cummunity service. We went to school for an essambly. It was really fun to experience because everyone was singing and clapping. then we went to a creche were we played with the children for over 3 hours. it was nice to see the kids were so excites and happy. we did some small games at first and then they had free time to play. everyone was chasing us as soon we started running. it was kind of haard to communicate because the kids did not speak english and so we had to use other things to show what we ment. A small boy was crying so I picked him up and he stopped crying but as asoon as I put him back on the ground he started again so I played with him. We i left to play with the others he started crying again. He was really cute! In the afternoon we went to the primary school where we are supposed to teach, luckly for me it is only 50 metres away from our hostel. we mete the class we our going to teach and they were all excited!! The rest of the day we prepared the lessons.
Robbenisland and District six was the program for this day. I was excited to see Robbenisland. we got a tour in a bus around the island because there's a town on the island aswell. this was were al the white gards lived. we stopped at the ends of the island to have a perfect view over the tablemountain. Ater that we got a tou in the prisson it selff. Our guide was a prisonner himself in the tijme of Apartheid. We saw some cells and read stories off people who had been there. One guy had to dig his own grave and he gut burried in it. only his had stuck out and the gards all could pee on his head. When I read that i felt some sort of guilt because the white people were so horrible. in District six we got a better image on the apprtheid. District 6 is a neighbourhood whichwas washed away completly becasue the government said so. Noor told his story of how he lived during the Apartheid. Again I read horrible stories of people being draged out of their houses. this day, I think. has made the most impact on me!
Touble mountain!!!! We started in Capetown with a sightseeing tour and we got out a table mountain. We had a lovely view over capetown! With an elevater we went to the top off the mountain but is was pertty scarry because it was cloudy. The elevater suddenly became caught up in the clouds and couldn't seea thing anymore. it ws scary but funny too. we walk around at the top hopping to see some of Capetown but we didn't. so we made fun for ourselves,m we were singing with a small group!
In the afternoon we had dinner in the old centre of Capetown and again we visited a small market.
Together with our buddies we went to Fairy Glenn Safari. We saw the Big 5!!! I found it funny how wild animals get used to the cars getiing so close and people shouting: 'lOOK THERE, A LION!!'. I was surprised how easy going they were. some animals even came up to the car. I touched one off the elephants!! Again I took some really nice pictures!!
The following days will come! I'm having a great time here and i wish we could stay longer!!
